Can anyone tell me, with reasons , why most of the area under curve in a normal probability distribution is considered to lie between mu - 3 sigma and mu + 3 sigma where mu=mean of the districution and sigma=standard deviation of the distribution ?

Asif, I am talking about normal probability distribution. I want to know why it is considered that almost whole part of the distribution lie between mu+3sigma and mu-3sigma where mu=mean, sigma=standard deviation of the distribution. I know there's a proof of this , but I can't find them in my books. Please help me through this if you can.
