What exactly is degree of unsaturation and ho do u calculate it for any organic compound for eg : find  D.U of acetaldehyde

Is there any specific formula to calculate D.U

degree of unsaturation is the number which implies the number of rings or multiple bonds present.
we calculate it by substracting from ideal case where there r no rings or multiple bonds. work on alkane, alkene alcohol,aldehydes
acetaldehyde has du=1.

Yaah there is very specific formula for it

And it is

DU = sigma[ n(v-2) ] /2 + 1

where sigma means summation and n is number of atoms with v valency.

eg C6HDU = {6(4-2)+6(1-2)}/2+1

                  = 6/2+1

                  = 4

                   it means 4 unsaturation that may be ring of pi bond.

                   (As we know there are 3 pi bonds and 1 ring)
