In case of A.C., the current changes its direction after a regular interval.  Though is not evident from your day to day operation, i.e. when you view T.V. or light a bulb or switch on a fan, it is happening at a very rapid pace.  In India, the current changes direction once every 10 ms.

Since, current changes direction every now and then, there can be no fixed direction of the current.  However, you must have seen direction in books.  They show the instantaneous direction.  The direction at an instant everntually depends upon the angle of the coil that rotates in the magnetic field in the power plant that supplies you electricity and also the load of city/cities.

D.C. always has fixed direction.  However, usually the 1.5 V cell that you use in torch etc. provides a constant voltage as well.  In the case of A.C. the diection and magnitude both are not fixed.  In India, the voltage supplied varies between 0V to 311V in both directions.
