What causes radioactivity? What is the atomic structure of atoms of radioactive elements?
Radioactivity is caused when an atom, no matter what is the reason, wants to give away some of its energy.
This happens because it wants to shift from an unstable configuration to a more stable configuration. When an atom makes that shift, energy released is called radioactivity.
Regarding the atomic structure all i know is that it is not stable. For example, The radioactive carbon has six protons and eight neutrons in its nucleus,so total atomic mass =14. This atom is not stable, and will break down, releasing nuclear energy in the process. Atomic structure is not stable and the relationship b/w the particles itself is not good inside the nucleus of atom.
Hope that helped.
