Why doesn't ultrasound get reflected?

I heard that ultrasound is used to identify cracks in a metal block. So if the wave hits the solid block, why doesn't it reflect back and goes through the block? Why does it reflect only if it reaches the crack?

The ultrasound is made to pass through the metal block like sound can be made to pass through a rod for ex.
