how do free electrons make a compound coloured?

for example:aqueous solution of alkali metals in liquid NH3 hav deep blue colour due to presence of ammoniated electrons (free electrons).

This is because ammoniated electrons can be excited by energy absorption and can then lose energy transmitting blue light.
