I had doubt in 2 small questions:-

1. CuSO4. 5 H2O contains which type of bonds -

a. Covalent only  b. Covalent and coordinate  c. Covalent, Coordinate,ionic and H-bonds  d. Ionic and covalent only.

The ans. is given as c. Please explain me the ans.

2. This is an objective asked in JEE '98. Answer to this ques. is given different in different books.

What is not correct about white phosphorous P4 ?

a. It has six P-P single bonds.

b. It has four P-P single bonds only.

c. It has four lone pairs of electrons.

d. It has PPP angle of 600.

I think the answers should be a,c. Please tell me the right ans.shy

1)

  • The bond between Cu2+ and SO42- is ionic.
  • The bonds in SO42-  and H20 are covalent.
  • The bond between SO42- and H20 are coordinate.

Hence the right answer is c

2)All u need to do is check the formula for P4 in ur N.C.E.R.T textbook

The right answer to this question is b. {Follows naturally as a & b both can't be right.} P4 has six P-P single bonds.

Thanks man, the first one's clear but second one I'll check b infact seems 2 be the right ans.

Cu2+ and SO4- ---->ionic

H2O ----->covalent

compund having water of crystallisation definitely have coordinate bonds.

So c should be correct.But I am afraid I don't find any H-bonds

To clear your fundaas visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_of_crystallization

and see 2nd & 3rd paragraphs in Further Examples.

The whole page is indeed very informative.

EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE A LOOK ON IT.IT WILL PAY YOU BACK.

Thanks Shashank, I read the two paras related to this question.....But what U said that H-bonds are not found in this compound is right.....But the ans. is given like that.....may be wrong......it was given in Comprehensive.......doesn't matter......thanks 4 the web url, it was really informative.

I think u ppl missed the co-ordinate bond in b/w S and O in SO42-.  So, option (c) is still correct.
