This problem is given in the NCERT.
It goes as this:
Analysis shows that nickel oxide has formula Ni0.98O100. What fractions of the nickel exist as Ni+2 and Ni+3 ions?
I am not getting accurate ans.
Plz. try it.
ANS. Ni+2 = 96% , Ni+3 = 4%
Let there be x moles of Ni2+ and y moles of Ni3+ in 1 mole of nickel oxide..
Now, x + y = 0.98
and, for electrical neutrality, 2x + 3y = 2
therefore, y = 2 - 1.96 = 0.04
therfore, y = 0.94
therefore, %Ni2+ = 0.04/0.98 x 100 = 4%
and hence, %Ni3+ = 100 - 4 = 96%
Now, x + y = 0.98
and, for electrical neutrality, 2x + 3y = 2
therefore, y = 2 - 1.96 = 0.04
therfore, y = 0.94
therefore, %Ni2+ = 0.04/0.98 x 100 = 4%
and hence, %Ni3+ = 100 - 4 = 96%
